Small Swimbaits for Big Canal Tarpon
Matching the hatch for big tarpon feeding on small baits using the 3.5" Slowtail Swimbait. Designed for slow retrieves near the surface or fishing the drop while jigging.
TIPS FOR TARGETING CANAL TARPON ON SWIMBAITS:
Casting: You'll be aware of canal tarpon by seeing them rolling sporadically on the surface. These fish may or may not be feeding near the surface, but will reveal their location. When casting to these tarpon, casting accuracy is crucial. With an accurate cast, try to place your lure within 3 feet of where a tarpon rolled.
Jigging Slack Line: Most often times, these deep water canal tarpon will be feeding in the mid-water column on small glass minnows. After an accurate cast is made, count down in seconds to the mid-depth of the water. Example, if water is fifteen feet deep, use a seven count before engaging your retrieve.
As your bait is sinking to the desired depth, allow a light slack line on the fall, this will give the lure maximum action on descent. If you notice any light taps on the rod or ticks the in the line, immediately engage the reel and be ready to set the hook.
Action: Work the bait back towards the angler using short one to two foot snaps of the rod tip, then allow the bait to sink for a few seconds back into the strike zone. This method of retrieve will resemble a small wounded baitfish.
