"The Swimbait Standard"

The Protail Paddle Swimbait:
The Hogy Protail Paddle is a simple yet robust paddle tail lure designed to tackle large predatory fish such as tarpon and tuna. Built with resilience and performance in mind, this lure is perfect for anglers seeking to land formidable species.
Pre-Rigged Performance: Greatly extended durability and peak high-power casting performance, straight out of the package. No rigging. No fussing. Just tie one on and fish.
Curiously Exceptional Hook-Up & Landing Ratios: Outfitted with VMC Barbarian hooks imported from France, known for their strength and penetration, the Protail Paddle delivers fast hook-sets and reliable holding power. The Battle Pocket design ensures clean penetration and keeps fish pinned through the entire fight.
Best-in-Class Plastic: Constructed from a premium, saltwater-grade custom blend of virgin BASF plastic, the Protail Paddle is designed to withstand aggressive fish and prolonged fights without tearing or losing its shape.

Turn-key. Tough. Fishy.
Our bodies have been obsessed over, from tail dynamics to reinforced battle hook pockets on the larger models. We’ve done all the obsessing so all you need to do is tie one on. No rigging. No tuning. No “magical” colors or limited runs. Just bad-ass swimbaits that catch big fish, every day.

Protail Paddle Assortments
This is how Hogy soft plastics are meant to be stored. The Mesh Wallet System keeps tails protected, baits organized, and gearfast-drying—on the boat, in your pack, or in the truck.
The One-Crate Wallet
Protail Paddle Wallet
The Hogy Mesh Wallet System is designed to store, protect, and deploy soft plastics the way serious anglers actually fish—without bulky boxes, tangled baits, or wasted space. Packaging and storage, unified into one system.
“A great swimbait for getting below bait schools to target the larger fish holding deep. These swimbaits excel at imitating bigger baits and triggering strikes from finicky tarpon, snook and jacks.” Capt. Chris Britton

DOCK TALK
FAQ about fishing applications & techniques for this product.
Why are factory pre-rigged swimbaits stronger than rigging your own?
It comes down to load distribution and friction.
On a factory pre-rigged swimbait, the bait is molded around the hook and head geometry. That means the plastic cures in direct contact with the hook shank and head, creating consistent wall thickness and even load paths throughout the body. When a fish strikes, shakes, or pulls under pressure, the force is spread across the entire molded structure—not concentrated at a single penetration point.
When you rig your own swimbait, the bait is pierced after the fact. That creates stress risers at the hook entry and exit points. Under load—especially during a hard cast or a violent head shake—the bait is far more likely to slide on the jig head, tear at the hook point, or split forward. Glue and zip ties can help, but they introduce new problems: stiff spots, inconsistent balance, and failure risk on high-power casts if the bait slips or shifts.
Factory molding eliminates those variables. The bait doesn’t rely on friction, adhesive, or compression alone to stay in place—it’s structurally integrated. That’s why pre-rigged Protail Paddles hold together longer, cast harder, and fail far less often under real fishing pressure.
What is the Battle Pocket, and how does it improve durability and landing ratios on big fish?
The Battle Pocket is about controlled flex, not just strength.
On larger Protail models, excess plastic is intentionally removed around the hook channel and replaced with a reinforced pocket geometry. This does three critical things at once:
First, it reduces tearing. By removing bulk plastic directly around the hook, the bait is less likely to split when the hook rotates or the fish shakes violently. There’s simply less material there to tear.
Second, it allows controlled compression and flex. When a big fish shakes its head or surges under load, the bait can deform slightly around the hook instead of fighting it. That flex absorbs shock, maintains hook penetration, and prevents the bait from acting like a rigid lever that pries the hook loose.
Third, it makes the hook harder for fish to spit. Because the bait compresses and moves with the fish, there’s less resistance for the fish to use as leverage. The hook stays oriented correctly and remains buried, reducing the chance of the fish throwing the bait during head shakes or directional changes.
In simple terms:
The bait moves with the fish
The hook stays pinned
he plastic survives the fight
That combination is why the Battle Pocket both extends bait life and increases landing ratios, especially on powerful fish like tuna, tarpon, and large striped bass.
Are there replacement tails?
While the Protail Paddle design does not facilitate replacement softbaits. The heavy-duty Protail Plastic is designed to last for extended periods of heavy use with trophy species.
How many baits come per package?
Protail Paddles are available in single and multi-bait packages. The product description will tell you the number of baits included.
How strong are the hooks?
The Protail Paddles feature premium 3X VMC Barbarian Jig Hooks, battled tested for all inshore and light tackle offshore species.
Salty Cape System
When to Swim the Hogy Protail Paddle
Environmental Factors (E) | Weather | Light | Sea Conditions
- Moderate to strong current
- Tidal flow around inlets, bridges, and structure
- Variable depth where weight adjustment matters
- Clear to moderately dirty water where profile matters more than flash
Why Protail: Swims clean across speeds and weights without tuning. Scales with current by changing head weight, not bait.
Observational Factors (O) | Wildlife Signals | Bait Presence | Fish Behavior
- Fish feeding on mid-size baitfish
- Followers that won’t commit to hard baits
- Fish holding just off bottom or mid-column
- Situations where durability matters (structure, pilings, repeated strikes)
Why Protail: Fishy profile, always-on paddle, and toughness let you keep fishing the same bait through missed strikes and pressure.
Structure + Approach (S+A)
- Bridges, pilings, docks (snook, tarpon, striped bass)
- Inlets, rips, and seams
- Channel edges and depth breaks
- Shoreline structure where current concentrates bait
Approach Logic: Position up-current and fish the Protail through the strike zone using weight to control depth. Same bait, same retrieve—adjust angle and sink time.
Technique (Retrieve Styles)
Reel, Reel, Pause: Effective for subsurface feeds and moving fish
Slow Roll / Steady Crank: Controlled, consistent retrieve that keeps the paddle engaged through the entire swim
Kerplunk (Cast & Sink): Used to reach deeper marks quickly
Fish the Swing: Maintains action on controlled drifts in current
Pinpoint Slow Jigging: Targets tuna and other deep-holding fish
Why Protail: The Protail Paddle supports a full-stack fishing system in one lure. Different retrieves—not different baits—cover these techniques, keeping the system simple while allowing you to adapt instantly as fish behavior changes.
