Crowdsourced Topwater Popper

Franken Macro Chug Popper

At Hogy, we’ve built a lot of plugs over the years, but this one has us flat-out bonkers. Born from hundreds of angler voices, tested across boat and surf, the Franken Popper is the most versatile topwater we’ve ever put in the lineup.

Earlier this year, we launched the tackle industry’s first crowd-sourced lure design survey757 hardcore anglers weighed in, and their input became our blueprint.

Loud Pops. Clean Walks. Built by You.

Franken Macro Chug Popper:

The Hogy Franken Popper is the first crowd-sourced lure in the saltwater game, designed from the input of 757 hardcore anglers who each helped shape its body, balance, and function.

Body Profile / Forage Match

  • Bulky baitfish profile: One-inch body imitates bunker, herring, or mackerel, while staying castable on inshore gear.
  • Versatile silhouette: Balanced oval taper gives enough finesse to stand in as squid or herring.

Swimming Action

  • Hybrid head: Throws classic loud chugs to call fish up.
  • Walk-the-dog: Transitions smoothly into a side-to-side cadence when worked with twitches, making it effective in calm or pressured conditions.
  • V-belly track: Keeps the plug stable in current seams and surf, making both chugging and walking retrieves clean and controlled.

Distance & Delivery

  • Rear-weighted balance: Designed for 7' boat rods and classic 9' surf rods alike, throws long and cuts wind, critical in surf and open beach situations.

Walk The Dog

Transitions smoothly into a side-to-side cadence when worked with twitches, making it effective in calm or pressured conditions.

Build & Endurance

Rigged with a single VMC belly treble hook and a trailing flag, built to handle repeated hits from trophy stripers & tuna.

Conservation-Minded Design

Single treble plus flag configuration reduces injury and improves release health for targeted species.

You can fish it loud or subtle. It’ll pop, walk, and do BOTH, depending on how you work it and of course what the fish are keyed in on. While bunker is king, versatility is critical. The Franken Popper’s shape and action needed to cover both fat-bodied forage like bunker and more nimble species like fleeing squid or herring, depending on how the angler works it. - Capt. Mike Hogan

Why the name Franken Popper?

Like Dr. Frankenstein’s creation, it was stitched together from many parts — poppers, pencils, walkers — all fused into one hybrid body and jolted to life.

Franken Popper Crowd Survey Design Data

Every once in a while, an idea comes along that flips the script. For us, that moment was back in January, when we asked a bold question: What if we didn’t design our next lure alone? What if we let the fishing community build it with us?

Design Considerations For Single Hook Plugs

We (as an industry and anglers collectively) are receiving new data indicating how damaging two hooks can be on a lure for catch-and-release fishing. As a result, we’re making big changes in on the hook front as we launch our # Hogy Hook 1 platform. Here, you’ll find an inside look on how and why we design lures

Conservation and Safety Factors with Plugs

A Deep Look at Hooks and Survival Rates of Striped Bass: Here at Hogy and Salty Cape, we have been thinking about the ways we can better contribute to conservation of these awesome fish we chase each year. At Hogy, we have committed huge resources for a small company like ours to research and develop lures that kick ass.

Performance of 1 vs 2 Hooks On Plugs

First, let’s decompose (one) hook vs (two) hooks in performance terms: One Hook Pros: Efficiency: Easier and faster to release fish, thereby increasing lure time in the water. Improved Action: When rigged properly, or designed for one hook, many lures perform better with a single hook with less hardware to encumber the action.

Plug Casting Rods

Built with a soft, yet sensitive blank, these rods resist accidental breakage due to high sticking but still offer high sensitivity to light bites on smaller presentations, plus they have plenty of backbone in the blank to apply added pressure for larger inshore species. Paired with an appropriately sized reel, these are a pleasure to fish for daily applications.
