Hogy Protail Paddle Classic | Tuna:

The Hogy Protail Paddle Classic isn’t just another swimbait—it’s a bluefin hunter. Designed within Hogy’s Universal platform, it’s built to take on tarpon to 200lbs inshore and tuna to 200lbs offshore. This bait has a tuna resume a mile long, with a high-vibration swim that fires up even the wariest bluefin, pulling them in for a crushing strike. Casting and Jigging Versatility.

3oz to 5oz: The Preferred Casting Sizes for Tuna: Ideal for surface-feeding tuna

  • Moderately Compact profile mimics natural bait, imitates butterfish, herring, small pogies, sand eels (olive).
  • Internal weighting allows for long-distance casting while keeping the
    bait just below the surface.
  • Medium-speed retrieve with occasional pauses maximizes effectiveness.
  • 5oz & 6oz: Drop-and-Reel Jigging Performance: Designed for deeper water and strong current conditions.
  • Allows for a drop-and-retrieve technique that mimics an injured
    baitfish.
  • Still fully castable for surface-feeding tuna when needed.

Durable Soft Plastic Construction

Built with a tough yet flexible material to withstand repeated strikes. Count on multiple tuna per bait.

VMC Barbarian Hook

The strongest and stickiest hook in the business, with a sickle bend design that cradles the fish in the V-notch for secure hooksets. Proven on tuna over 200lbs.

Optimized Casting Weight

Punches through wind and reaches distant fish with ease. Weight placement to cast long distances and head shape to stay in the strike zone longer.

“I love this lure because it’s a big-little presentation for tuna. At 4oz+, I can cast it on heavy gear, but it still has that mid-size bait profile. It’s big enough but not too big. The bait comes alive the second it hits the water. You can fish it fast or slow, on top or down deep. It’s a perfect lure." Capt. Mike Hogan

FAQ

Quick answers for most commonly asked questions about the Protail Paddle and tuna applications.

How do I retrieve the Hogy Protail paddle for tuna?

For starters, there is no wrong way! This lure will pretty much take over once it hits the water. That said, here’s a favorite ways to fish one:

Slow Roll – Best for Sight-Casting Cruising Fish: Ideal for bluefin feeding on butterfish. A steady, moderate retrieve keeps the bait in the strike zone longer. Allows anglers to "lead" the fish for a more natural approach. Occasional pauses let the bait flutter, triggering reaction strikes.

Fast Retrieve – Best for Actively Feeding Fish: High-speed retrieve mimics fleeing baitfish. Best for aggressive, breaking fish in a feeding frenzy. Triggers reaction strikes from competitive tuna.

Drop & Jig – Best for Deepwater Jigging: Drop the bait to the strike zone and use a crank-and-drop retrieve. Paddle tail flutters naturally on the fall, mimicking a wounded baitfish.

Kerplunk Cast – Hybrid Cast-and-Jig: Cast into an expired feed and let the jig sink for 30 seconds. Crank for 30 seconds, then let it fall again for another 30 seconds. Ideal for tuna milling around after a feed slows down.

How To: Run N' Gun Tuna Fishing | Casting Protail Swimbaits

In this video, we join Capt. Rob Lowell of Cape Cod Offshore Charters for a day of Run N' Gun style tuna fishing out East of Cape Cod. With greasy calm conditions, the name of the game was utilizing a Run N' Gun style approach to quickly get in range of short-lived surface feeds. The lure of choice was the 4oz Hogy Protail Paddle. The subtle action of this swimbait proved effective when fished on a high-speed retrieve.
