Pre-rigged. Slim Sand Eel profile. Stout Gig Game Power.

The Protail Eel Softbait:
The Hogy Protail HD Eel is the pre-rigged answer to one of the most effective bait profiles in saltwater fishing: the sand eel. Built on the same Protail platform as our Paddle series, the HD Eel pairs a slim, elongated eel body with a heavy-thump paddle tail that activates immediately on the retrieve. The result is a bait that sinks faster, slices through current, and delivers a lifelike sand eel silhouette without sacrificing the tail kick that triggers strikes.
Pre-Rigged Performance: Greatly extended durability and peak high-power casting performance, straight out of the package. No rigging. No fussing. Just tie one on and fish.
Curiously Exceptional Hook-Up & Landing Ratios: Outfitted with VMC Barbarian hooks imported from France, known for their strength and penetration, the Protail Eel delivers fast hook-sets and reliable holding power.
Best-in-Class Plastic: Constructed from a premium, saltwater-grade custom blend of virgin BASF plastic, the Protail Eel is designed to withstand aggressive fish and prolonged fights without tearing or losing its shape.

Protail Eel
The Protail HD Eel is the slender-profile counterpart to the Protail Paddle. Same Protail platform — same plastic, same hooks, same pre-rigged integrity — but shaped to match sand eels, silversides, and slim bait. It sinks faster, slices current, and fills the gap when the Paddle's wider body overshoots the hatch. One eel. Fewer decisions. More fish in the boat.
“What is it about the hook on this lure? It always hooks the fish in the sweet spot and I’ve yet to lose a single fish that’s gone in for a taste on this protail” Hogy Customer Kyle

When to Swim the Hogy Protail Eel
Environmental Factors (E) | Weather | Light | Sea Conditions
- Moderate to strong current
- Tidal flow around inlets, bridges, canals, and structure
- Variable depth where a faster sink rate matters
- Clear to moderately dirty water where profile matters more than flash
- Heavy current where wider swimbaits lose their track
Why Protail HD Eel: Slices through current instead of fighting it. Sinks faster than the Paddle in the same conditions. Matches sand eel and slim bait profiles precisely.
Observational Factors (O) | Wildlife Signals | Bait Presence | Fish Behavior
Inshore Factors:
- Fish feeding on sand eels, silversides, or slim-profile bait
- Pressured or neutral fish that refuse wider-profile swimbaits
- Fish holding mid-column or near bottom in current
- Night feeds where eel profiles match natural eel and sand eel behavior
- Situations where durability matters — structure, pilings, repeated strikes
Why Protail HD Eel: The slender profile doesn't overwhelm finicky or pressured fish. The always-on paddle tail still triggers strikes without over-stimulation.
Offshore Factors:
- Tuna milling or breezing on the surface without sustained feeds
- Fish feeding on slim, soft-bodied bait such as sand eels or butterfish
- Bait showing on the machine with fish holding below it
- Subsurface marks that won't commit to topwater presentations
- Fish reacting better to natural profiles than flash or noise
Why Protail HD Eel: The natural eel profile and always-on paddle trigger bites from selective fish without over-stimulation. Effective for leading and sight-casting to milling tuna.
Structure + Approach (S+A)
Openwater & Offshore:
- Casting to breaking fish — Eel profile casts far and maintains swim on pickup and retrieve
- Drift fishing over bait marks — Position up-drift and fish vertically or near-vertically
- Troll-scan and drop — Used as a drop lure when marking fish while searching
- Emergency casting lure — Always kept rigged on an offshore spinning rod for unexpected encounters
Inshore:
- Bridges, pilings, docks (snook, tarpon, striped bass)
- Inlets, rips, seams, and canal-style fisheries
- Channel edges and depth breaks
Rocky shorelines and boulder fields - Nighttime structure — shadow lines, dock lights, bridge pilings
Approach Logic: Position up-current and fish the HD Eel through the strike zone. The slim profile sinks into the zone faster than a Paddle. Adjust weight with the unrigged Swim Eel versions for deeper or heavier current scenarios.
Technique (Retrieve Styles)
Reel, Reel, Pause: Effective for subsurface feeds and moving fish
Slow Roll / Steady Crank: Controlled, consistent retrieve that keeps the paddle engaged through the entire swim
Kerplunk (Cast & Sink): Used to reach deeper marks quickly — faster sink than Paddle in same weight
Fish the Swing: The signature eel technique. Maintains action on controlled drifts in current
Dead Drift: Natural current carry for the most subtle presentation
Pinpoint Slow Jigging: Targets deep-holding fish on structure
Why Protail HD Eel: The HD Eel supports the same full-stack fishing system as the Paddle. Different retrieves — not different baits — cover these techniques. The eel profile simply extends the system into slender-bait scenarios the Paddle can't match.
