Where and When to Use:

Bottom Trolling for Trophy Stripers: Perfectly imitates big eels and sea worms in bottom dwelling environments, enticing predators holding close to the bottom. Ideal for targeting fish holding tight to underwater ledges, boulder fields, and drop-offs. Tubes are easily positioned at specific depths with proper boat maneuvering, line management, and weighting systems. Quick answers for most commonly asked questions about the Perfect Tube and fishing applications.

Why braid instead of wire or lead core?

Braid makes tubes run 30–40% deeper unweighted compared to mono, and every tactical adjustment — drop-backs, throttle kills, turns — is sharper with zero stretch. Plus, I use the same rod and reel for jigging and tuna trolling. One setup, multiple jobs. The Hogy Trolling Weight handles depth; braid handles control.

What’s the best worm option?

Live sea worm is the gold standard, no question. But when I can’t get them, Fishbites strips are my first backup — durable, scented, and effective. Fleece worm strips from a fabric store are the sleeper option: they expand 4x in water and pulse beautifully. Always have backups in the crate.

Is tube fishing really that tactical, or can I just set it and forget it?

Both. Most anglers troll tubes straight and steady with great success — it’s one of the simplest trolling systems in existence. But for me, it’s the most tactical lure in my crate. Every pass is a series of adjustments: throttle, spool, turns, drops. The tube rewards both approaches.

When do I use the tube instead of the Deep Diver?

The tube is for slow, structure-focused trolling — contour lines, boulder fields, eelgrass flats, channels. It swims naturally at 1.5–2.5 knots. The Deep Diver is for faster, open-water search mode at 2.5–3.5 knots, tracking 15–30 ft. If fish are pinned to structure, tube. If fish are scattered mid-column, Diver.

How to fish the Perfect Tube and fishing applications.

Environmental Factors (E):

- Bright days: Stripers hold tighter to bottom in clear, sunny conditions. The tube reaches them and stays horizontal in their comfort zone.

- Windy days: Casting is out, but contour-trolling with the tube maintains a consistent presentation even when drift control is tough.

- Strong current: Trolling with the tide gives a natural angle and pace, allowing the tube’s spiral to work in harmony with water flow.

- Slack tide: Fish scatter or suspend. The tube methodically canvasses structure and intercepts lazy feeders when topwater is dead.

Observational Factors (O):

- Suspended stripers on sonar: Troll the tube just above bottom marks where fish are holding mid-column, especially when they’re ignoring vertical jigs.

- Resident fish on structure: Slow down, add tight turns, and hold your line through their lanes. The tube’s long, hypnotic profile does the rest.

- No surface activity: When birds are sitting and bait isn’t pushing up, tubing is the perfect fallback. Quietly cover ground and tease out buried fish.

- Worm hatches: Red and wine tubes during spring/summer worm hatches are devastating.

Structure + Approach (S + A)

- Eelgrass flats: Work inside and outside edges where bass wait in ambush. A shallow-trolled tube is stealthy and lethal.

- Shoal drop-offs: Troll parallel to the breaks at variable depth. Let the tube dance just over the edge where bait spills off with the tide.

- Deep contours: A 4 oz trolling weight gets you into deeper lanes and subtle bowls — prime territory for fish that won’t budge for anything else.

- Shallow boulder fields: The 16” tube shines here. Work through the 15–20’ zone in tight loops to entice fish sitting just off the rocks.

- Natural channels: Follow the ebb and flow, pick up quickly at the end of a productive line, and re-deploy with a slightly different angle.

- Mussel beds: Slow troll just off the bottom. Mussel beds concentrate forage and draw stripers close. Best fished during outgoing tides.

How to Fish a Tube and Worm for Big Stripers

Unlike most tubes that require anglers to form their own bends in the tube and hope the tube swims correctly, the SI Perfect Tube is unique in that it's 'pre-tuned' to fish perfectly right out of the package.
