Inshore Casting: Softbaits

The Hogy Softbait Philosophy

Soft plastics are the closer.

Plugs start the conversation. Jigs deliver distance and depth. But when fish are following, inspecting, and refusing — when they’ve seen every hardbait in the box and still won’t commit — softbaits convert.

A soft plastic body does two things no hardbait can. First, it moves naturally. Soft plastic flexes, undulates, and pulses with current and rod input in ways that rigid bodies cannot replicate. Second, it feels real. When a fish mouths a softbait, it doesn’t reject it instantly the way it rejects metal or resin. That extra half-second of commitment is the difference between a follow and a hookup.

In the Hogy System, softbaits are organized into two families:

  • Swimbaits: Built-in action. Tails that thump, paddle, flutter, or glide. Protail Paddles, Slowtails, and Swim Eels.
  • Stickbaits: No built-in action. The angler controls everything. The Hogy Original.
This division matters because it defines how each softbait is fished and when to choose one over the other.
