Sight Casting Tripletail with Slowtail Swimbaits

Capt. Ross Gallagher walks through his ideal setup for casting to triple tail down in Southern Florida. The Hogy Slowtail Swimbait is a perfect presentation for targeting these structure-dwelling tripletail. The life-like action of the twin tails allows for maximum action throughout the entirety of the water column.

TIPS FOR SIGHT-CASTING TRIPLETAIL:

  1. Calculate your drift with wind and current. Approach the tripletail from downwind to avoid drifting into the structure and spooking the fish.
  2. Smaller-sized baits like the 3.5" or 4.5" slowtail imitate small baitfish and offer a better-sized profile for tripletail to inhale. Larger-sized baits may result in missed hook sets.
  3. Allow a slight pause of 1-2 seconds when a tripletail strikes your bait to ensure a solid hookset.
  4. For landing tripletail, a net is recommended to avoid pulling hooks or injury from sharp gill plates on the fish.
