Description

The Hogy XL Deep Swimmer is a precision-engineered deep-diving plug designed for serious inshore and offshore anglers targeting trophy-class fish up to 185lbs. Designed for both low AND high-speed trolling, this 7-inch, full-bodied plug reaches depths of 30-35 feet and maintains a stable, true-tracking swim at speeds up to 12 knots.

Built with thru-wired construction, 4X VMC in-line hooks, and heavy-duty split rings, this lure withstands the brutal strikes of bluefin tuna, wahoo, and large striped bass. The wide-body profile ensures a natural baitfish wobble, while reflective, translucent, and glow color options increase visibility in all conditions.

    Solid Movement

I love that you can feel their stride through the rod real well….also….when hooked up to a hot in a rip….you know you can hammer down the drag and pull the fish out without bending hooks and beating up the lure…

    Secret weapon for deepwater tarpon!

I've found this plug to be perfect for targeting scattered tarpon holding in 18' - 25' of water. Trolling at 3mph with the tide, the bait swims mid-water column, right where tarpon are holding. Hold the rod with the rod tip towards the water and hold on! So far, I've jumped 13 early season tarpon from 80lb - 150lb on the plug while others were struggling with live and dead bait.

    Shhhhh. Don't tell anyone!

    Troll up heavy bass

This is the only fast trolling bait I use in the spring. 40+ feet of water brings up big stripers. Releasing big fish is a great way to spend the morning.

Design Considerations For Single Hook Plugs

We (as an industry and anglers collectively) are receiving new data indicating how damaging two hooks can be on a lure for catch-and-release fishing. As a result, we’re making big changes in on the hook front as we launch our # Hogy Hook 1 platform. Here, you’ll find an inside look on how and why we design lures

Hook Influence on Lure Action

Weight and Balance: Hook size can affect the weight and balance of a lure, potentially altering its action. Larger hooks might weigh down a lure, changing its swimming pattern, while smaller hooks might allow for a more natural presentation. Optimal swimming the action of the lure.

Hook Types: J Hooks vs. Treble Hooks

When choosing J hooks for your lures, it's crucial to understand the various types of J hooks and how their orientation can impact the lure's performance. Here’s a detailed guide that includes factors like hook types, number of hooks, size, wire gauge, and orientation for swimming plugs, poppers, and pencil poppers.

Hook Size and Gap

Matching Hook Size to Target Species: Hook Size: Larger fish generally require larger hooks to ensure a secure hook set, while smaller fish need appropriately sized hooks to avoid injury and increase hook-up rates. Hook Gap: The size of the hook gap is crucial for effective hook penetration. Larger hooks with wider gap
