When to Use:

- Blind casting in confidence zone

- Fan casting scattered life

- Casting into fading feeds

Rod Position:

- Hold the rod slightly upward, nearly horizontal

- This keeps the lure swimming 2–3 feet below the surface, where it’s most effective and easiest for tuna to track

Default Retrieve:

- Steady, moderate retrieve

Adjustments:

- Missed strike or follow: briefly accelerate, then return to a steady pace

- Strong current: slow the retrieve and let the swing work for you

- Wind: maintain line tension — don’t overwork the rod

Two Variations | Tactical Adjustments

Commitment Trigger: Reel, Reel, Reel — Pause
Used when fish are tracking but not committing.

You’ll often see:

- A boil behind the lure

- A shadow tracking

- A missed swipe

- A push of water

When that happens:

- Accelerate briefly — 3–5 faster cranks

- Do not jerk the rod

- Return immediately to steady swim

Why it works: Predators react to fleeing prey. The sudden speed change creates urgency without breaking the lure’s natural swim pattern.

Fan-Cast Search Mode (Water-Covering Strategy)

I am not sure how much fan casting does offshore with big lures and big tuna eyesight, but it surely gives does give me confidence. I think this is especially important when fishing the paremeter of a feed, whether it’s actively feeding tuna deep in birds, or a bubble feed. I think the lures direction and angle relative to the feeding system at had is what matters most.

Execution:

- Pick a casting grid: left, center, right, long, short
- Work the outer edges before firing directly into the heart of the feed
- Vary casting angles relative to the movement of the tuna

The goal is to intersect the travel lane of fish moving in and out of the system. All types of tuna often slide the perimeter, tracking wounded bait escaping sideways or downward. Your casting angle can make the lure look like part of that escape pattern.

Under-Bird Depth Adjustment (6oz Control Mode)

When birds — typically shearwaters on Cape Cod — are intensely working a tuna feed and picking up your lure before the tuna do, you need to change depth immediately. It becomes nearly impossible to fish a surface or near-surface plug effectively. This is a true Cape Cod problem.

In heavy shearwater feeds:

- Birds are sitting directly on the water

- They are diving aggressively and constantly

- They will grab your lure on splashdown

- They will track it on the surface

- They can foul hooks or force you to reel out

Why the 6oz Matters:

The extra 2oz does three critical things:

- Gets the lure below the bird zone faster

- Stabilizes the swim under surface chaos

- Keeps the bait in the tuna’s visual lane

Execution: If birds are extremely aggressive, fish it deliberately slower than normal and let the lure settle slightly between turns of the handle.

- Cast just outside the fray — but very close. You want proximity without throwing directly into diving birds.

- Let it sink before reeling. Give it a 5–10 count depending on drift and current.

- Engage with a slower retrieve and controlled pauses. Keep it subsurface. The goal is safe depth, not speed.
