Open Water Bonito on the Peanut Jig
In this Hogy How-To I’m breaking down how I target finicky bonito and albies in open water with the Hogy Peanut Jig. On this trip off Monomoy, fish were keyed in tight on peanut bunker, selective and fussy. Here’s how I got it done with the Hogy Peanut Jig and light leader.
The Approach:
We set up upwind of the feeds, making long downwind casts to lead the fish. The trick was keeping the jig in the strike zone with maximum hang time. A slow roll with subtle flutter mimicked an easy meal drifting out of the feed, perfect for pressured bonito that don’t want to chase fast.
My Gear List + Retrieve
Hogy Peanut Jig 1oz (Peanut Bunker)
Match-the-Hatch Peanut Imitator
• True peanut bunker profile and color pattern
• Casts long, swims shallow in the zone
• Built-in wobble action, perfectly keeled
• Flutter fall on pauses triggers eats even after the feed dies
How I fished it:
Slow Roll: Steady retrieve with rod tip low, keeping the jig tracking mid-column
Flutter Pause: Small twitches and pauses let it “hang” and fall like a stunned peanut, most strikes came right there
Outfit:
Hogy Inshore System: 7’ M
