Charter Grade Micro Chug Popper: 1/2oz - 3.5inch

The Hogy Mini Chug Popper, traditionally known for revolutionizing tuna popping, is equally effective for targeting false albacore inshore. Featuring a large cup face, this popper maximizes water displacement and creates an attention-grabbing splash. When worked correctly, the popper throws a significant amount of water ahead, amplifying splash and noise to serve as powerful attractants. This chugging style retrieve makes this lure irresistible to false albacore, especially in calm waters with scattered fish.

• Deep Cup Design: The cup is proportionally deeper than the Classic Popper’s concave face. This creates a louder, lower-frequency “glug” instead of a sharp “bloop.” The sound carries farther through noisy water and targets species that respond to heavy subsurface displacement rather than surface splash.
• Micro-Bait Profile: At 3.5”, the Micro Chug matches glass minnows, bay anchovies, silversides, juvenile squid, and baby sand eels. When fish are keyed on forage this small, a 5.5” popper is three times too big. The Micro Chug creates big-popper sound in a small-bait body.
• Floating Design: Sits high on the pause. This means you can park it over a structure pocket, a rip seam, or a staging area and work it in place with slow, deliberate chugs. No sinking out of the zone. The pause is where the flag works and following fish commit.
• Pop N’ Fly Compatibility: The Micro Chug is the primary popper for the Pop N’ Fly rig. Remove the hooks, trail a 3” Protail Fly 18 inches behind, and the Chug becomes a casting and sound platform while the fly does the eating. When micro-bait refusal goes nuclear, this is the escalation rig.
• Hook (1) Platform: Ships with the Hogy Hook (1) configuration: single VMC 4X belly treble plus a hand-tied genuine bucktail flag on stainless steel in the tail. The flag closes them.

• Slow Chug — The Primary Retrieve:

When: Albies on micro bait, structure fish, fish holding in one area

- Low rod angle. Slow, deliberate chugs with 2–4 second pauses between each. The deep cup throws a heavy “glug” and displaces water. During the pause, the flag breathes and the plug sits motionless. This is the call-in cadence — sound, pause, sound, pause. Fish come to investigate the disturbance and find either the flag or the plug body waiting.

• Fast Chug — The Competition Trigger:

When: Aggressive albies, competitive feeds, bonito

- High rod angle. Quick succession chugs that create a machine-gun rhythm of “glug-glug-glug.” This out-fishes metals and epoxy jigs when albies are feeding selectively. The rapid sound and splash trigger competitive instinct.

• Pop N’ Fly:

When: Micro-bait refusal has defeated every other approach

- Remove hooks from the Micro Chug. Trail a 3” Protail Fly on 15–18 inches of fluorocarbon. Pop once or twice, then pause and let the fly dance in the strike zone. The popper provides casting distance and sound. The fly provides the impossibly small presentation that finicky fish demand. This rig catches fish when everything else fails.

• Environmental Factors (E):

- Calm water: Where the chug sound is most audible and effective. Each “glug” carries.

- Light chop: Still effective — the deep cup cuts through moderate surface noise.

- Skinny water: Small floating profile doesn’t overdrive shallow zones.

• Observational Factors (O):

- Albies on micro forage: The defining scenario. Match the bait size with the Chug’s profile, overpower it with the Chug’s sound.

- Schoolie stripers in backwaters: The Chug’s small size and big noise draws schoolies from structure without spooking.

- Fish following but not eating: The flag’s micro-movement on the pause converts followers.

• Structure + Approach (S + A):

- Rip edges and current seams: Pop the Chug uptide and let it drift through the seam on the pause. Sound carries down-current.

- Back-bay flats and marsh edges: The 3.5” profile works skinny water without spooking. Slow chug with long pauses.

- Boat: Drift over structure and pop ahead of the drift. The Chug parks over the zone while you work it.

- Shore: Fan-cast from jetties, bridges, and canal edges. The deep cup loads easily on light tackle.
