FAQ
Quick answers for most commonly asked questions about the The Hogy Lean Rod System
Can I exclusively use this rod inshore?
Yes, I use mine on almost every trip—from early spring stripers to late-season albies. It’s a big lure rod, but not massive. So all the mid-range plugs and softbaits are fair game. It’s also a dynamite jigging rod for stripers and groundfish in 60 to 80 feet of water. I’ve filmed a number
of casting and jigging videos with this rod:
- Stripers in the rips off Nantucket
- Stripers in the Monomoy rips
- Deep sea bass off Gay Head
- Vertical jigging for big stripers in heavy current
- OG Swimmer tight to the rocks
- Countless more…
Can I jig vertically with this rod?
Absolutely. Like all rods in our inshore system, this one was designed with a moderate-fast action. While the original intention of that action is for casting a wide range of lures and enjoying a pleasant fight, it turns out to be excellent for vertical jigging. I use it all the time on deepwater jigging shoots for both stripers and groundfish.
How does it behave under load?
This is a fairly heavy rod—meaning it’s stiff right up to the tip. But when it loads on a cast or during a fight, you can see it’s truly a moderate-fast action rod. The top 18" flex first during a cast (what I call the “primary action”), but with heavier lures or under pressure from a big fish, it transitions smoothly into the midsection. Smaller fish get fought off the tip; big ones bend the whole blank. It’s just a very happy rod to fish with.
Why Moderate-Fast?
Fast = Too Stiff below the tip
- Doesn’t load well on heavier plugs or softbaits
- Can feel harsh, especially if you're lob-casting or fighting fish at close range
Moderate = Too Soft - Sluggish when snap-casting lighter lures
- Doesn’t track well on longer casts or in wind
Moderate-Fast = Just Right
- Sharp and responsive in the top 18"
- Quickly transitions to a moderate backbone under pressure
- Handles both light and heavy lures depending on casting style
