The Eel Tail Built for Real Fishing, Not Limited Drops
“Lean, tough as nails, and locked in — the perfect eel tail.”

Description
The Protail Swim Eel Tail reflects our effort to make the strongest and sexiest eel tail softbait for trophy-class fish, both inshore and offshore. On HD Barbarian Jig Heads, it’s a proven tuna slayer; on Classic Barbarian Jig Heads, it transforms into a precision tool for stripers, snook, and tarpon.
Design & Construction
Molded from Hogy’s HDUV ProTail Soft Plastic, the Eel Tail is ultra-tough yet soft, offering unmatched durability without compromising action. Its translucent, UV-reactive body adds a realistic shimmer, while the long, tapered tail delivers a tight, rolling pulse that mimics sand eels, halfbeaks, and other narrow forage.
The snug-fit collar interface mates perfectly with both HD Tuna Barbaruna and perfectly grips the 1” screw ceeper on Hogy’s Classic Barbarian Jig Heads, locking the lure in place without glue in either case. The result is a clean, straight alignment and true tracking at any speed.
Rigging Notes & Design
Snug-Fit Tail Socket: Precision-engineered to grip HDUV softbait tails perfectly inline. No glue, no screws—just a clean, mechanical lock that keeps the bait straight and secure, even under extreme drag. Rigging takes seconds: slide, seat, and fish.
Fastest Tuna Softbait on the market: The HD Jig Head system eliminates downtime. Swap between 8” Eel Tails and 6” Paddle Thumpers instantly to match depth, current, or forage. Perfectly balanced and always tracking true, it’s plug-and-play rigging for serious anglers.
HDUV ProTail Plastic: Each tail is molded from our ultra-tough HDUV ProTail compound—soft enough for lifelike motion, yet resilient enough to withstand dozens of strikes from tuna, stripers, or jacks. The UV-reactive finish adds a natural shimmer that lights up underwater.
Perfect Alignment, Every Time: The socket-to-tail interface was tuned for a flawless transition between head and body. That seamless connection means no wobble, no roll, and a perfectly natural swim through every phase of the retrieve.
Key Features
Body Profile / Forage Match
- Streamlined eel profile: Long, tapered body mirrors natural forage such as sand eels, herring, and mackerel, maintaining a lifelike presence in clear or moving water.
- Balanced shape: Designed to cut current efficiently, holding position and posture through canal swings, deep rips, and offshore structure.
Swimming Action
- Adaptive swim pattern: Delivers a loose roll and slither at slow speeds, transitioning to a tight, rhythmic pulse when retrieved faster.
- True tracking: Stays upright and stable through variable flow, producing consistent action across retrieve speeds and current strength.
Distance & Delivery
- Streamlined casting design: Casts efficiently into wind and current, reaching deep seams, ledges, and offshore marks with precision.
- Controlled sink rate: Allows anglers to cover the full water column without overloading gear or losing presentation accuracy.
Build & Endurance
- Dense, durable body: Constructed from HDUV ProTail soft plastic to resist tearing and distortion from heavy drag and repeated strikes.
- Secure head interface: Fits cleanly on HD or Classic Barbarian Jig Heads, maintaining alignment and strength under pressure.
Storage & Organization
- Clamshell mesh wallet system: Compatible with Hogy’s modular wallets to keep tails straight, organized, and ready to fish without warping.
Conservation & Sustainability
- Single-hook rig compatibility: Enables easy, low-impact releases while maintaining high hookup efficiency.
- PET fully recyclable packaging: Built for continued use and long-term durability, reducing waste and extending the life of your gear.
Retrieve & Techniques
Casting Applications for Bluefin Tuna
When bluefin are busting bait near the surface or holding mid-water, the Heavy Hitter delivers unmatched action and control.
Retrieve #1: The “Sweep and Drop”
- Cast ahead of the feed or into sonar marks.
- Allow the bait to sink into the strike zone, then use long, sweeping rod pulls (3–5 feet).
- Follow each sweep with a controlled drop — most strikes occur on the fall.
- This retrieve mimics a wounded herring or mackerel fleeing toward deeper water.
Retrieve #2: The “Power Swim”
- Cast into surface feeds or bird piles.
- Begin a moderate-speed retrieve, maintaining steady tail thump and head wobble.
- Add short rod tip twitches every 5–6 turns to simulate panicked prey.
- Perfect for working the edges of surface feeds where larger tuna patrol for wounded bait.
Vertical Jigging Applications for Deep or Suspended Tuna
Retrieve #1: The “Slow Pitch Glide”
- Drop to the desired depth and use a slow, 3–4 foot lift, then follow the bait’s fall with light tension.
- The Swim Eel’s body flutters and thumps naturally as it glides downward, triggering opportunistic bites from deep feeders.
- Ideal when tuna are feeding off structure or suspended mid-column in heavy current.
Retrieve #2: The “Aggressive Pulse”
- Drop directly into marked schools and work the bait with short, sharp 1–2 foot pops.
- Maintain tight contact — the eel tail drives continuous vibration through each motion.
- This retrieve is deadly on active, competitive fish, especially when paired with sonar-based precision drops.

Amazing soft rubber baits high-quality with a great storage unit. I can see why these mesh wallets catch on it great for deeper water fishing with heavy jig heads using them for stripers now hope to use them for tuna later.

These plastics work great. They hold up to multiple fish and have great action. Would like some more obnoxious color choices for fishing deeper water

I’m using the Slappy eel rigged on a jig head. I fish the Chesapeake bay and it’s tributaries for Stripers. It has big fish appeal and is versatile. Rigged on different weight jigs you can fish it from 5 to 80 ft. I got my first bag about two weeks ago and it has already accounted for several huge Strippers I’ve ordered two more bags. My only complaint is the absence of a hook slot to allow you to rig it with a weightless hook, that’s my reason for the 4 stars instead of 5
