Skippy Retrieve: Work the Pocket Squid with a fast, skippy retrieve across the surface to imitate a fleeing squid trying to escape. Keep the rod tip high and use quick turns of the reel with occasional short twitches to make the bait dart, splash, and track just under or on top of the surface. This retrieve shines around rips, current seams, and breaking fish when stripers are actively feeding upward.

Low and Slow Retrieve: For more cautious or picky fish, swim the Pocket Squid low and slow with a steady retrieve that keeps the bait gliding naturally through the strike zone. Let the bait settle slightly, then retrieve just fast enough to activate the softbait’s swimming action without overpowering it. This is the go-to approach when fish are keyed in on smaller squid but unwilling to chase a faster presentation.

Needlefish Retrieve: Fish the Pocket Squid like a soft-bodied needlefish by using a slow, steady retrieve with the rod tip low and minimal rod action. The goal is a subtle, natural presentation that tracks cleanly with a slim baitfish/squid profile, especially in calm water or when fish are feeding selectively. Add an occasional pause or light twitch to break the rhythm and trigger followers into committing.
