FAQ
Quick answers for most commonly asked questions about the The Hogy Lean Rod System
What makes this rod more comfortable than others?
The action. Most tuna jigging rods are too fast, too stiff, or too short to balance control with comfort. This rod has a parabolic bend that:
- Cushions the fight
- Protects hooks and leader
- Reduces fatigue in your lower back and arms
Plus, the soft gimbal butt sits comfortably in a harness belt without digging in or shifting under load.
Why is the short length important?
Simple: less rod = less fatigue and more control. Long rods create more leverage against you. With a 5'10" rod, you can lift vertically, lean into the fight, and absorb pressure through the rod—not your back. It’s the ideal length for jigging deep and fighting hard.
What reel and line setup should I use?
For optimal performance with the 5'9" Hogy Tuna Jigging Rod, we recommend:
• Reel: 18000–20000 class spinning reel
• Main Line: 60–80lb braided line (100lb hollow core optional)
• Leader: 60–130lb fluorocarbon
• Drag Setting: 15–22lb (depending on jig weight and target species)
• Knot: PR or FG knot recommended for maximum strength and smooth casting
Can I cast with this rod?
Technically, yes—but it’s not what this rod is built for.
The reality with dedicated jigging rods is they don’t cross over into casting nearly as well as a moderate-fast tuna casting rod can cross into jigging. The short 5'10" blank makes it hard to load and launch a lure, especially when distance matters.
That said, I’ve been known to “kerplunk” a 6oz Hogy Harness Jig 40–50 feet into a tight cluster of birds when I’m in a rush. A quick lob, straight drop, and back in the game. It works in a pinch—but anything more, and the rod starts working against you.
Why the limitations?
- Short blank = limited casting stroke and lower line speed
- Wind-on leaders = more friction through guides, less fluid casting
- Guide layout = optimized for vertical line flow, not long-range control
If casting’s the priority, reach for the 7' Tuna Casting Rod. If you’re working vertically in 100 feet of water, this is the tool. Both belong in your system—but this one’s a specialist.
Why Moderate-Fast for Jigging?
- Fast = Jackhammer Feel – You’ll miss fish and lose the rhythm
- Moderate = Mushy – Can’t recover fast enough for deep jig work
- Moderate-Fast = Balanced – Keeps the jig moving smoothly while giving you total control over hooksets and fight dynamics
