Yellowfin & Bigeye Tuna
Shines in high-speed casting and distance-focused retrieves.
- Handles heavy strikes without issue
- Cushions impact while still driving hooksets deep
Mahi (Bull Class)
Just soft enough to be enjoyable when targeting bull mahi on high flyers.

FAQ
Quick answers for most commonly asked questions about the The Hogy Lean Rod System
Can this rod really handle a 150lb+ tuna?
Yes, confidently. It’s built for it. The blank loads deep under pressure and helps reduce pulled hooks when fish go boat-side. I’ve landed plenty of tuna over 150lbs on this setup—comfortably and without fear.
How does this rod behave under load and casting?
Casting: Smooth load for heavy lures, recovers fast
• Fighting: Tip stays active while midsection cushions surges
• Pressure Control: Deep bend holds braid tight without jackhammering your back
• Gimbal Ready: Short rear section sits clean in your belt—no flailing, no fatigue
Rod Design Details That Matter
- Gimbal Butt: Locks securely in rod holders for long runs and righting belts for long fights
- Balanced Blank: No weird hinge points—just a true bend under load
- Built for Tuna Plugs: Everything from sliders to chuggers to deep softbaits
- Designed to Pair with Hogy’s Complete Tuna System
Why Moderate-Fast?
• Fast = Too Stiff – Rips hooks and fatigues the angler
• Moderate = Too Loose – Struggles with heavy plugs and wind
• Moderate-Fast = Just Right – Long casts, soft hook sets, and power under load
Final Thought:
If I had to pick one rod to cast at tuna from a center console all season long, this is it. Balanced. Battle-tested. Kind to your back. Mean to the fish.
Built to perform. Tuned for forgiveness. Part of the system.
Can I jig with this rod?
Well, for starters—this rod wasn’t designed for vertical jigging, so I wouldn’t recommend it for deepwater jigging on very large fish. At 7 feet, that extra length becomes a leverage liability when you’re fighting vertically, especially under high drag. A shorter rod will always be more efficient in that setting.
That said, the blank on this rod is relatively soft compared to most tuna sticks, especially those ultra-stiff, fast-action broomsticks built strictly for jigging. That softer midsection actually makes it enjoyable in a vertical battle—especially with school bluefin or mid-depth cod.
True story: Last summer, I accidentally grabbed this rod instead of my jigging rod while south of Block Island. Midway through the fight, I realized it—not only did it handle great, but the moderate-fast bend actually made the fight feel smoother and more fun. I even talked about it on camera during the battle. So yes, it’s not built for jigging—but it’s more capable and more comfortable than most would expect.
Why is a longer rod harder for jigging?
Leverage and fatigue. That’s the short version.
When jigging, especially for big fish in deep water, the goal is to apply vertical pressure while maintaining control of the jig and conserving your energy. A longer rod (like a 7-footer) creates two main challenges:
Increased Torque Against You
- Think of the rod as a lever. The longer it is, the more leverage the fish has against you. That means more force is transferred to your body, especially your back, arms, and wrists.
- The fish’s pull has more “handle” to work with, so you end up absorbing more of the fight—and tiring out faster.
Less Efficient Lift
- With a longer rod, more of your upward motion goes into flexing the rod, not actually lifting the jig or the fish. That’s wasted energy.
- You also lose some direct connection with the jig, especially in deep water or when trying to bounce the jig in a tight vertical column.
Awkward Ergonomics
- The longer blank creates more sweep in the arc of your motion. In tight quarters—like under a T-top or when shoulder-to-shoulder on the rail—it’s just more awkward.
- It also forces you to work at a steeper angle, which puts strain on your lower back and makes you more likely to overwork the tip.
